Can you tell us about your role on the project management team at Tellwell, and what a typical day looks like for you?
As a project manager, I guide authors through every stage of their publishing journey. My typical day involves coordinating with authors, editors, designers, and other teams, ensuring deadlines are met and quality is maintained. I manage tasks, track progress, and proactively address any issues to keep the process seamless for both authors and our internal teams.
Project managers play a key role in guiding authors through the publishing process. How do you support authors from the early stages of their book projects to completion?
From the very first conversation, I help authors clarify their vision, set realistic timelines, and understand the steps involved in publishing. I stay in close contact throughout, providing guidance on editing, design, and distribution. My goal is to make the process transparent and manageable, so authors can focus on their creative work while feeling supported every step of the way.
Tellwell’s publishing process involves working with several teams, such as editing, design, illustration, and distribution. How do you coordinate between these teams to keep projects running smoothly?
I act as the central point of communication between teams, ensuring everyone is aligned on deadlines, priorities, and author expectations. By maintaining clear timelines, sending concise updates, and anticipating potential bottlenecks, I can coordinate efficiently so that each stage flows into the next without delays.
What are some of the most common questions or concerns authors have when they start the publishing process?
Authors often wonder how long the process will take, what support they’ll receive for editing and design, and how their book will ultimately reach readers. Many also have questions about formatting, cover design, or distribution options.
What are some of the challenges that can come up during a book project, and how do you help resolve them?
Book projects involve many interconnected steps, so challenges are a natural part of the process. Common issues include unexpected revisions, delays in approvals, or technical problems with files. Sometimes, authors may feel overwhelmed by the number of steps required to get their book published, which can make even small setbacks feel significant.
When these challenges arise, I focus on proactive problem-solving. I coordinate closely with editing, design, and other teams to address issues quickly while keeping the author informed. Clear communication and practical solutions help maintain momentum and ensure the project stays on track.
Ultimately, overcoming challenges is part of the journey. Each resolution strengthens collaboration, builds trust with authors, and contributes to a smoother process for future projects.
Publishing a book can be an emotional journey for many authors. How do you help keep authors reassured and confident throughout the process?
I focus on clear communication, empathy, and timely updates. Celebrating milestones along the way—like finishing edits, approving a cover, or receiving the first print proofs—helps authors see tangible progress. Knowing they have a reliable partner throughout the journey often alleviates anxiety and builds confidence.
What’s one misconception people might have about the role of a project manager in publishing?
Many people assume a project manager simply oversees schedules and deadlines. In reality, we’re deeply involved in problem-solving, guiding authors creatively, and ensuring quality at every stage. Our role is as much about support and collaboration as it is about coordination.
What do you find most rewarding about helping authors bring their books to life?
The most rewarding part of my work is seeing an author’s vision come to life. From the first manuscript submission to the moment the finished book is in their hands, being part of that transformation is incredibly fulfilling. It’s more than just completing a project—it’s helping someone tell their story, share their knowledge, or inspire readers in a way that only a book can.
I especially value the personal connection I build with authors. Helping them navigate challenges, celebrate milestones, and overcome doubts makes the success even more meaningful. When an author expresses excitement or pride in their finished book, it’s a reminder of why this work is so important.
Being able to contribute to someone’s creative journey in a tangible, lasting way is what keeps me motivated. Each book is a new story and a new partnership, and helping authors bring that to life never gets old.

Are there particular moments in the publishing process that you especially enjoy being part of?
There are two moments I always look forward to. The first is the early stages of a project, when authors share their vision and ideas. This is a time of excitement and creativity, and it’s inspiring to see the story start to take shape. It’s also a chance to help set the tone for the rest of the project, ensuring that authors feel confident and supported from the very beginning.
The second moment I cherish is the final launch—when the book is complete and ready for readers. Holding the finished product, seeing the design and content come together perfectly, and celebrating the author’s accomplishment is immensely gratifying. It’s a culmination of collaboration, effort, and creativity, and witnessing that joy is one of the highlights of the job.
Every stage has its own satisfaction, but these milestones—the creative spark at the start and the tangible achievement at the finish—make the journey truly memorable.
What skills do you think are most important for someone working in project management in the publishing industry?
Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills are essential. Equally important are empathy, patience, and the ability to adapt—since every author’s journey is unique, flexibility and understanding are key to guiding them successfully.
From your experience, what advice would you give to authors who are about to begin their publishing journey?
My biggest advice for authors is to approach the publishing journey with patience and a sense of organization. There are many steps, from editing and design to distribution and promotion, and keeping track of tasks while maintaining a creative mindset is essential. Leaning on your project team for guidance can help simplify complex processes and ensure you stay on track.
It’s also important to celebrate milestones along the way. Each edit approved, each design finalized, and each proof reviewed is a tangible sign of progress. Taking time to acknowledge these achievements not only builds confidence but also keeps the momentum going.
Finally, trust the process. Publishing can feel daunting, but with a clear plan, good communication, and a willingness to adapt, authors can transform their vision into a finished book they’re proud of. Approaching it as a journey rather than a race makes the experience much more rewarding.

Finally, what’s something about you outside of work that the Tellwell community might find interesting?
These hobbies give me a chance to recharge and maintain balance in life, and I think that energy and focus naturally carry over in small ways to my work. Beyond that, they’re just a lot of fun and a great way to enjoy time outside of work.
Outside of work, I love staying active and trying new ways to move my body. I practice yoga and pilates regularly, which I find both relaxing and energizing, and I also enjoy playing pickleball whenever I get the chance. It’s a fun, social way to stay active while challenging myself in new ways.
