Meet Caitlin Chisling, one of Tellwell’s amazing book-marketing consultants! Based in Canada, Caitlin is an accomplished author and an expert in book marketing, so she understands the publishing journey firsthand.

Can you share with us what led you to pursue a career in marketing, particularly within the publishing industry?

Books are my biggest passion! Working in the publishing industry has always been my goal. Marketing seemed like a natural fit—I love being creative and strategic, and supporting authors throughout their publishing journey.

As a marketing consultant at Tellwell, what does a typical day look like for you?

My typical day starts around 7 a.m., when I go over the day’s priorities and organize my to-do list. I check my email, answer any questions, and attend to my clients. I spend my mornings fulfilling various marketing services, such as organizing Goodreads giveaways and blog tours, designing promotional materials, and writing press releases. My afternoon typically contains a consultation call with a new author, discussing their book, learning about their goals, and exploring what marketing tactics best suit their needs. After that, I’ll get to work creating their custom marketing strategy. 

What do you find most rewarding about assisting authors in their marketing journey?

Every author I’ve had the privilege of working with has been so inspiring! I love hearing their stories, the ones they write and the ones that led them to pick up a pen in the first place. I’m constantly blown away by the passion, dedication, and creativity of our authors. 

How has your experience as an author influenced the way you approach marketing strategies for self-published authors?

As an author myself, I understand how difficult it is to even write a book in the first place, without even considering the steps that come after. Sharing your writing is an incredibly raw and vulnerable experience. Promoting it can be even tougher! I always approach my authors with that sensitivity in mind. 

What challenges have you faced as an author, and how have these experiences informed your approach to assisting other authors with their marketing efforts?

If there is a challenge for an author to face, I’ve probably personally tackled it! I know the struggle of balancing writing with a full workload, managing your social media presence, networking, self-promotion, maintaining a website, and other aspects of creating an author brand. That means I also know the importance of focusing on what is not only going to be most effective but also enjoyable and sustainable. 

In your experience, what are the most impactful marketing tactics that authors can use to reach their target audience?

Social media. Regardless of your genre, the people who will buy your book are likely scrolling on Instagram, Facebook, X, or TikTok. I encourage authors to pick one or two of their favourite platforms and plan a consistent posting schedule. Give your readers a reason to follow you. Consider what sort of value you can offer them and share it. Are you a fiction author who can offer writing advice? Gardening tips that pair with your botany-themed book? Advice on how to engage early readers with your picture book? Everyone has something to offer. 

What are some common misconceptions authors have about book marketing, and how do you clarify these misconceptions in your consulting work?

That marketing needs to wait until after a book has been published to begin. Even if you are still in the early stages of writing your manuscript, or only have an idea floating around in your head, you can be cultivating your audience, working on your author brand, and building hype! When I have the opportunity to speak with authors before their books are ready for distribution, I explore ways that they can create excitement and anticipation for their book among their network through social media posts, giveaways, and email marketing. You want to take every opportunity you can to get potential readers primed and ready to buy your book. 

For authors on a budget, what cost-effective marketing approaches do you recommend to maximize exposure and sales of their books?

Social media is free! You don’t need to spend additional funds on Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok advertisements to see the boost in engagement that comes with consistent, intentional posting. While advertisements are a great tool, a connection with your audience will reap huge rewards. Additionally, I would recommend exploring sources that can generate exposure for you and provide third-party validation for you and your book, whether that’s through reaching out to local media outlets, asking friends and family to review your book, or seeing if bloggers or influencers will create a post featuring your book in exchange for a free copy. 

For authors who are overwhelmed by the idea of marketing their books, what steps do you suggest to create a manageable and effective marketing plan?

Focus on what you enjoy. If you dislike creating reels or crafting tweets, you won’t be consistent. It’s far better to post regularly on one or two platforms than to stretch yourself across posting intermittently on four or five. The tactics that you can sustain are ultimately going to be the most impactful. 

As trends in book-marketing evolve, what emerging strategies or tools do you believe authors should pay attention to for future success?

I would encourage authors to pay attention to ways in which different kinds of media can be utilized for book promotion. When it comes to audio, I’m particularly interested right now in the rising success of audiobooks, particularly when combined with strategic promotion through targeted podcast and Spotify ads. For video, Reels, TikToks, and other short-form video formats remain one of the best opportunities for promotion. Keep on top of evolving Bookstagram and BookTok trends and play around with including them in your promotion. 

Lastly, what advice would you give to authors who want to ensure the longevity of their book-marketing efforts? How can they sustain momentum and continue to promote their work over time?

As I said above, focusing on tactics you will enjoy regularly engaging with are going to be key to sustaining momentum. If you love Instagram, then you’ll look forward to sharing posts, updating your stories, and responding to reader comments, and your following will grow. Additionally, don’t be afraid to try new tactics. Follow authors you admire on social media, sign up for their newsletters, and see if their marketing approaches can be adapted to work for you.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’ve been happily married for 12 years and have three kids: two lovely daughters and an angel son. Spending meaningful time with my family is important for me. 

I completed my bachelor’s in computer engineering with a focus on computer networking at the University of San Carlos. Music is a passion of mine—I enjoy all genres and can play the guitar. Sports, particularly basketball, captivate my interest, and I also have a fondness for art, including drawing, design, and decoration. Nature, with its lush greens and serene blues, holds a special place in my heart.

How did you start your journey as a book designer, and what drew you to working with Tellwell Publishing?

During my college years, I began developing my design skills by taking on commissioned projects in my spare time. Upon graduating, I decided to pursue a career in design, alongside managing computer shops and laboratories, driven by my deep fascination in the field. 

I spent two years at Sunstar Publishing, followed by five years at Author Solutions Inc. Later, I joined Black Card Books for two years before settling into Tellwell, where I’ve been for the past three years. What attracted me to Tellwell was their commitment to valuing their employees. Even during the hiring process, I was impressed by their treatment of human resources. For me, work becomes less of a chore when you feel valued, acknowledged, and supported. Tellwell has demonstrated that it’s not just about what you contribute to the company, but also about receiving recognition and support that matches your hard work.

Tellwell publishing consultant Josephine Cataluña talks about her personal inspiration and what each author brings to the world

Authors rely on publishing consultants to advise, inform, and set expectations through the production process. Josephine Cataluña has dedicated herself to ensuring authors access the right services to achieve their goals and bring their dreams to life. In addition to her passion for literary projects, Josephine also finds inspiration from music and nature.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a peaceful person who wants to enjoy life with my favourite people. I love animals and nature, especially white sand beaches. Summer is my favourite season. I do yoga and sing a lot. I was a bit of an introvert, especially during my younger years. I just hang out and open to a couple of friends. People who have high self-confidence who get to speak or perform in front of a huge crowd amazed me, maybe because I was not as confident then as I am now. I also enjoy learning about different cultures, cuisines, and fashion styles. I am a fan of romantic-comedy novels and movies.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

What I enjoy most about my role is being able to talk with different people from different walks of life and hearing about their life experiences and inspirations for writing their books. I get to understand things from their perspective, and I gain wisdom with each encounter, because more often than not I resonate with the stories they share. And when the book project is already done, it gives me a different fulfillment knowing I have helped an author figure their way forward in terms of publishing.

What does a typical week look like for you at Tellwell?

It gets quite busy at the start of the week with all the booked appointments and inquiries (by phone or email), talking with different authors, all at a different stage on their publishing journeys. Then I spend the middle part of the week towards Friday negotiating contracts while keeping in mind their service needs and what solution I could bring to each author.

What is a question you get asked the most by authors? How do you answer it? 

The question I get asked the most is “How much does it cost to publish?” and I answer it with full transparency, making sure that they understand the value of each service they will be paying for.

Do you have an achievement that you are most proud of? What inspires you to succeed? 

I am proud of my Sales Rookie 2022 award, because it means a lot of authors trust me and my consulting. I might be a neophyte at book publishing, but I am very passionate at delivering quality service and genuine advice. I understand the value that each author brings to the world.

If you authored a book, what would it be about? 

If I were to publish a book, it would probably be about love in general and how it impacts a person’s transformation in becoming the best version of themselves.

What do you enjoy doing most outside work? 

Singing and spending quality time with the people I love.

Do you have any good books or content to recommend? 

I do have a short list of romance novels that I would love to get a hold of by the end of the year. A couple of them would be the latest releases by Nicholas Sparks.

What inspires you? 

Ambition, happiness, and doing new things. Seeing someone achieve their dreams, seeing someone’s smile, doing adventures and thinking about happy moments with my daughter, family and friends—these are what inspire me. The beauty of nature, too!

How to choose an illustrator for your children’s book

Veronika Hipolito is Tellwell’s in-house illustrator. She is known for creating whimsical children’s book illustrations and beautiful cover designs. Her illustration style is magical, expressive, and free-flowing. Tell us about yourself.
I’m an illustrator and a painter. My concoction of surreal, detailed elements, dominantly on a blue colour palette accentuated with gold foils and ink, make the imagery stand out. This is also how I express my passion for merging culture and nature in every possible way.

What did you do before joining the Tellwell team?
I was a graphic artist and illustrator at a local newspaper. I’m also an art-event organizer who caters to both local and international creatives. I’m an active artist in the arts community participating in exhibits, art and literary conventions, and competitions.

What inspired you to work in publishing?
My passion in design inspired me to pursue a career in publishing. I am really happy to be able to get to continue to challenge myself in designing more interesting books.

How do you define your role at Tellwell?
Being a QA (quality assurance specialist) is a huge responsibility to carry on your shoulders. One mistake can potentially affect our relationship with the author or can affect our company’s reputation. I am very keen on details to make sure we can deliver the best results. At the end of the day, it is fun, challenging, and fulfilling at the same time.

Where do you draw creative inspiration from?
Internet and social media. I also check other designers’ work whom I admire the most.

Why is it important for an author to take their time to consider and review the interior of their book?
A successful book is more than just a manuscript thrown between a cover. One of the key elements to success is a professional interior design that adheres to industry standards, and to mimic what readers, retailers, and reviewers expect. So, it’s really important for the author to take the time to consider and review the book and for us to generate an aesthetically pleasing interior.

Everyone thinks design is just about the cover but it’s so much more. How does interior design help elevate a book?
Interior design helps elevate the book through these key elements; space, line, forms, light, color, texture, and pattern; creative-interesting design and keeping them balanced is the key to creating an aesthetically pleasing interior.

Also, a well laid out interior plays a crucial role in the overall reading experience, and can even impact your ability to get a bookseller’s attention.

What do you enjoy most about working with authors?

It is very fulfilling to play a small role in helping authors achieve their dreams and complete their goals. It brings me much joy! I like forming friendly and strong relationships with authors so they know they can rely on me to be their ally.

How would you describe your personality? What motivates you?

I am an introvert. I prefer having a quiet environment to think, reflect, and focus. I’m motivated to achieve my full potential and continue growing individually and professionally. I appreciate it when people recognize my efforts.

What is the most common misconception when it comes to the self-publishing industry? 

Authors, at times, confuse the self-publishing model with the traditional publishing model. There is a common misconception that once the author submits their manuscript, we will do all the legwork to bring their book to market.

While Tellwell certainly takes many of the pain points away during this process by creating the cover, laying out the interior, editing and distribution (depending on the author’s package), it still requires the author to submit input, approve changes and be involved in the process.

The authors who are most engaged during the production process tend to carry the same enthusiasm in marketing their book, which is crucial to success.

What puts a smile on your face every day? 

Learning something new, helping others in small ways, and showing appreciation. When I push my limits and accomplish things that I once thought were very difficult, that puts a wide smile on my face. 

What do you enjoy most about working with authors?

“Meeting” a lot of interesting people, knowing their stories and how they came up with their books is delightful. My absolute favourite feeling is when my authors tell me I’ve helped them fulfill their dreams.

What advice do you have for authors going through the publishing process?

My advice is to ask a lot of questions, especially for first-time authors. Having patience throughout the process is really important too. I understand the excitement in wanting to be published quickly, but I advise authors to not rush through approving drafts— take the time to carefully review them:)

What advice do you have for authors who are considering publishing their manuscript?

I’m trying to write a book myself as well so I would say, don’t hesitate and take a leap of faith because it will be your legacy.
