We’re passionate about books so it’s no surprise that some of us at Tellwell not only love helping authors through their publishing journey but are going through our own! Project manager Joy is currently writing her novel. Learn more about Joy, her role as a Tellwell project manager, and what her book is about!
What puts a smile on your face every day?
Learning something new, helping others in small ways, and showing appreciation. When I push my limits and accomplish things that I once thought were very difficult, that puts a wide smile on my face.
What do you enjoy most about working with authors?
“Meeting” a lot of interesting people, knowing their stories and how they came up with their books is delightful. My absolute favourite feeling is when my authors tell me I’ve helped them fulfill their dreams.
What advice do you have for authors going through the publishing process?
My advice is to ask a lot of questions, especially for first-time authors. Having patience throughout the process is really important too. I understand the excitement in wanting to be published quickly, but I advise authors to not rush through approving drafts— take the time to carefully review them:)
What advice do you have for authors who are considering publishing their manuscript?
I’m trying to write a book myself as well so I would say, don’t hesitate and take a leap of faith because it will be your legacy.
What’s your book about?
I’m writing a fiction thriller/fantasy novel about a female spy who turns into a vampire.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My typical workday starts by checking my schedule for appointments and meetings and then organizing how to complete my tasks and prioritize them depending on their urgency and importance.
What inspires you?
I would say my greatest inspiration is my family. I want them to be proud of me. I am also inspired when I see someone working hard to create change or make life better for people. Whenever there’s an opportunity, I volunteer for charitable organizations or organize a small group to help others.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
In this pandemic, survival is our biggest achievement. We have lost our routines, we have no choice but to stay at home and it’s not easy to deal with anxiety or depression. Despite all of these, we were able to work from home with a great support system and found ways to work together despite being apart. I’m really proud of that.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Though I enjoy going out with friends, I’m a bit of a lone ranger so I love doing my own groceries, shopping and reading books. I love getting completely lost and absorbed in a good story.
What have you been reading/watching/listening to lately? Any recommendations?
I’m into fantasy books but one of my colleagues recommended Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys and it was so great and heartbreaking I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. I also love true crime documentaries. I just finished watching the “Don’t F**k With Cats” so if you are into true crime, I recommend this—it was psychotic yet intelligent.
