Love historical fiction?

Then be sure to check out Culloden to Sydney Town by T.J. Lovat.

Culloden to Sydney Town is a work of historical fiction. It covers the century from the Lovat family’s move from the Scottish Highlands to its arrival in New South Wales. The story begins with the defeat of the Jacobite army at Culloden on the sixteenth of April 1746, a day of devastating loss for the Highlander cause for freedom from English rule. It is also a day of death and rebirth for this Scottish family. The story ends with the arrival in Sydney Town of two brothers, great-grandsons of a fallen Jacobite hero, in 1837.

Members of the family move to England, Ireland, and Persia, where their Highland culture is challenged by prejudice and religious difference. One child joins the British Army and serves in the Americas in the period leading to the War of Independence, struggling between loyalty to the British cause and sympathy for the American quest for freedom. Another family member joins the Royal Navy and travels on the Third Fleet to New South Wales in 1791, challenged by the spectre of an alien force invading other people’s lands and the plight of the convicts. It is his own sons who make their way to New South Wales half a century later to establish themselves as pioneers in the colony, one as a teacher, the other as a clergyman.

The story covers issues of love, loyalty and betrayal, as well as cultural and religious difference. The key characters are inserted into historical events, exploring the lives of real people, including Scottish nobles, American Founding Fathers and early governors of New South Wales. The novel captures a slice of history marked by exploration, the discovery of new lands, and the clash between old and new cultures.

Craving a crime thriller?

Then be sure to check out The Bean Sidhe by Ernest L. Canning.

“What’s most impressive about THE BEAN SIDHE is its command over its unique blend of tension and farce. From the first page, the action tempts and seduces. What follows is a sprint toward the next scene, then the next rib-splitting laugh. When the final destination is reached, it proves to be a bittersweet achievement, since the journey was so pleasing.”

~Neil Czeszejko for IndieReader

Fan of historical romance?

Then be sure to check out Them Days by Glenn P. Booth.

“This heartfelt story grabs the reader from the very start and doesn’t let go. Fans of historical fiction are in for a treat.”

The Prairies Book Review

Discrimination, war in Europe, a pandemic . . .

Sofiya, a young Ukrainian immigrant, experiences all of this and more. It could be 2022, but it’s Manitoba in the early 1900s.

Sofiya is the third consecutive girl born on a poor homestead near Gimli in 1903. She is bright and feisty but nothing more is expected of her than to be a domestic, and at age thirteen she is sent to be a maid to a wealthy family in Winnipeg. There, she experiences the condescension of the English towards the “Bohunks,” while her half-brother is interned during WWI and deemed an enemy alien.

While the Great War is raging in Europe, an undeclared war between the classes is being fought at home. This conflict comes to a head in the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919, when the working classes rise up against their English masters, shut down the city and demand a better deal. The city is divided and everyone must choose a side.

Them Days takes you on Sofiya’s journey as she discovers what it means to be an immigrant and a woman struggling to find love and her identity, at the same time that Canada is breaking free from Mother England’s apron strings.

Looking for Investment Advice?

Then be sure to check out The Investment Committee Guide to Prudence by Jonathan J. Woolverton, CFA.

The Investment Committee Guide To Prudence is a manual for plan administration and management for any organization seeking to establish an effective investment program.

JJ’s investment career spans more than five decades. He has been the chief investment strategist for a pension plan sponsor, a managing director and senior consultant within a global investment planning consultant firm, and a managing director and chief operating officer of an investment management organization. Over his career, JJ has attended well over a thousand investment committee meetings as a plan sponsor, a consultant, and a money manager. In the majority of these meetings, he has found that committee members lack three things: in-depth investment expertise to effectively carry out their fiduciary responsibilities, the necessary time allocation to administer and manage the investment program in the best interests of the beneficiaries, and the ability to develop an efficient monitoring system to hold all service providers accountable for the products and services they provide.

This book outlines the steps to establishing investment policy; formulating asset mix strategy; creating an appropriate investment management structure; undertaking investment manager searches; and highlighting the conflicts of interest, biases, and self-interests of the various service providers.

This book is designed to assist members of investment committees in their role as fiduciaries/trustees/administrators.
