The inspiration for creating this book was born out of the desire to teach young children a simplistic and enjoyable way to learn about Canada’s capitals in their provinces and territories.

Embracing Canada by Jan Soukup
From a young age, the author was captivated by Canada’s vast wilderness, rich Indigenous history, and the strength and honesty of its people. After the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, he immigrated to Canada with an MSc in Nuclear Engineering and settled in Edmonton with his fiancée. Despite challenges, he earned a PhD in Nuclear Physics from the University of Alberta and worked at prestigious research institutions, including CERN. He eventually returned to Edmonton, working at the University of Alberta until his retirement in 2011. Throughout his career, his love for Canada’s wilderness remained a constant inspiration.
Canada 1867 – 2017 by Paul Taillefer
In compiling, writing, and illustrating the most important event that marked the history of Canada each year since Confederation, the author restricted his choices to history, political, economic, and cultural phenomena. In the 1960s, the author acquired hundreds of clippings, magazines, encyclopaedias, and books pertaining to Canada’s history. He had contemplated preparing a special project for Canada’s Centennial with them, but was forced to drop the idea for lack of time. In retirement, he was urged by his wife Pierrette, who saw his archives lingering in filing cabinets and his personal library, to get to work on his project. He did so at the end of 2012. This is the result.
