Meet Tellwell Designer Bonnie Mitchell

am_velocefondo20170709_01If your role at Tellwell were to be summarized into a book title, what would it be?

Word InDesigns Out: Translating Word files to InDesign files.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

When I’ve created a cover and book block that represent the book perfectly and the author is ecstatic with the results.

What do think is the most important aspect of an author’s cover design?

Balancing text and imagery to capture the story or the essence of the book. This creates a powerful emotional reaction inviting the reader to take a closer look.

What is your favourite type of book to design and why?

Fiction. Yes, it is as broad a genre as it is open to the imagination. With a good book synopsis the cover has so many design possibilities. There are certain design principles that make the interior of the book readable, however there is no limit to how the title pages, headers, footers, chapter starts and sections can be styled. I find it the best genre for pushing the limits of design and doing something unique.

What are your quirks to get your creativity flowing?

I’ve got many. One of my favourites has been sparked by my friends who are fathers – puns, memes and oxymorons. My friends and I sometimes converse using as many puns and oxymorons as we can. Some of my friends don’t appreciate this behaviour and I remind them that, “I take fun seriously.”

What has been one of the most gratifying experiences you’ve had when designing an author’s book?

I had one author tell me that “they had tears in their eyes” when they saw the cover. I captured the emotion of the storyline and she felt it. There is no deeper satisfaction for me than connecting emotionally with a person through visual art and design. It is so much different than communication with words.

What got you interested in designing books?

Good question, maybe it was in my blood. I have always enjoyed looking at magazine layouts, book design and any multi-paged document. I love seeing how all the different elements work together over a series of pages.

What did you do before Tellwell?

I worked at a few print shops and publishing companies in roles ranging from customer service, design and layout and management.

If you were to publish a book, what would it be about?

I hope to write a book about the origin of phrases we use. What did it originally mean to “let the cat out of the bag” or why should we follow the “rule of thumb”? We understand the colloquial use, but what was its origin? Wait for my book and find out!

What do you do in your spare time?

I am freelancing graphic designer and when I’m done my seriously fun work, I love to cycle, and just be outdoors as much as possible. My friends (my muses) play a big part in my life as inspiration, deep thoughts, and just having serious fun keeping my child curious…and often in trouble!
