As a Project Manager at Tellwell, I act as a liaison between the author and our illustrators, designers, editors and distributors. The central purpose of my role is to help support authors as they embark on the exciting adventure of self-publishing a book, and help them overcome any challenges that may arise throughout the process.
2. What’s your favourite part of the job?
Creatively collaborating with authors to help bring their vision to life! I really enjoy supporting authors with articulating the goals they have for things like cover design or children’s book illustrations, ensuring that the final product meets or exceeds their expectations.
3. What’s the most challenging part of your job?
One of the most challenging parts of my job is supporting authors with troubleshooting any technical challenges that may arise throughout the process. Although our authors reside all around the world, I’m always available over the phone or Skype to help work out any technology-related kinks.
4. What’s the most common question you get from new authors?
The most common questions that I get from new authors are usually related to distribution. The self-publishing industry can be a little bit difficult to navigate sometimes, especially when it comes to how your book is going to be distributed to online retailers. Luckily, I’m here to help work through any questions they may have about the final (and very exciting!) stages of the book publishing process.
5. What advice do you have for first time authors when they begin the production process?
Take the time to do some research on the market that you’d like to reach with your book! Authors often get stuck with communicating the vision they have for their book to our staff. I usually suggest that they walk into their local bookstore and into the section that they’d like to have their book in one day to see which books catch their eye!
6. What can authors do to ensure that they have a positive experience with the production process?
Proactive communication. We have a team of Project Managers at Tellwell who love connecting with authors. If you have any questions or concerns, please proactively communicate with your Project Manager to ensure that all of your questions have been answered before we proceed to the next stage of the publishing process. It’s really important to our team that our authors have the best experience possible, and I strongly believe that this starts with open communication!
7. What did you do before Tellwell?
I’m originally from Toronto, Ontario, where I focused on digital communications and community engagement for small and large-scale organizations. I moved to Victoria just over two years ago to pursue a Masters Degree, where I researched creativity and innovation in cities.
8. What do you like to read?
It varies quite a bit! My two favourite books that I’ve read in recent memory are Happy City by Charles Montgomery and Salt by Nayyirah Waheed.
9. What do you do in your spare time?
Depends on the season! If it’s winter, you’ll probably find me driving to a mountain, either on the island or along the Sea to Sky to go skiing. If it’s the summer, I’ll be camping with friends or in Tofino playing in the waves.
